Planning Board meets to talk special use permits
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Tonight the New Hanover County Planning Commission met to talk special use permits in a meeting that lasted three hours. They went into deep details for those permits.
Director of the Department of Planning and Land Use, Chris O’Keefe said there are two sections to a special use permit ordinance. He said the first is a narrative that describes the process and timeline that a company would go through to get the permit and the second is the table of permitted uses. That table talks about which industries even need to apply for a special use permit in the first place.
“We want all of our processes to be very clear and transparent and predictable so that if a company is looking at Wilmington, they’re not going to be chased off by the PROCESS that we have in place. We want to make sure that all our processes are user friendly,” said O’Keefe.
He said they also want the process to really evaluate proposals for industries so that they best fit the needs of the county. He said they are hoping to have a final proposal by January and have that in front of the county commission by February.
