Police: Duo kicks in apartment door before firing shots in the air
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are investigating after they say an armed duo kicked in the door to a Wilmington apartment before firing shots into the air when leaving the scene.
Wilmington Police say it happened at 8:15 p.m. in the 200 block of Darlington Avenue. That’s where officers say they got alerts when ShotSpotter picked up gunfire in the area of an apartment parking lot.
Police found several shell casings at the scene, and while searching for more they say a woman walked up to them saying her apartment was broken into. They say the woman told them she was at home with her two young children when she went to open the door for a friend.
Officers say when the woman noticed two men with guns coming towards her apartment, she tried to close the door. They say one of the suspects kicked in the door, so the woman grabbed her children and pushed past the duo before walking across the street with her friend.
Police say the men went inside her apartment, and then walked out firing shots into the air as they left. They say the woman told police she watched them get into a silver vehicle and drive away from the area. WPD is still investigating.
