Police find loaded gun, drugs during traffic stop

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police arrested a duo after they say officers found a loaded gun and drugs during a traffic stop Saturday.

Wilmington Police say officers stopped a car in the 500 block of S. 18th Street just after 9 p.m. That’s when police say they noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from the car.

Officers say while they were speaking to the female driver, a man walked up to the car, saying it was his. Officers say they stopped him when he tried opening the passenger car door, just before telling them there was a gun inside and that everything in the car was his.

Police say they found a loaded .22 caliber handgun and a dozen of individually packaged units of love boat, which is a form of PCP-laced marijuana soaked in embalming fluid.

Both the driver, Ashley Newsome, 21, and the man who claimed the car was his, Damon Jones, 21, both from Wilmington, were arrested. Both are charged with possession of Schedule II drugs within 1,000 feet of a park.
