Police: Driver won’t be charged in fatal pedestrian accident
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are investigating a fatal accident near a busy Wilmington intersection around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.
According to witnesses, a pedestrian was coming across Shipyard Boulevard in front of Wilmington Fire Station 5 when he made it to the center lane before being struck by a truck.
A Wilmington Police spokeswoman said the pedestrian was dead when law enforcement arrived.
Police closed the eastbound lanes of Shipyard Boulevard for about two hours. The accident is still under investigation by the Wilmington Police Department Traffic Unit.
WPD said the driver of the truck is not being charged. A police spokeswoman said neither drugs nor alcohol played a part in the accident as far as the driver is concerned.
The name of the victim is being withheld until next of kin is notified.
