Police: Man wanted for assaulting his mom, stealing money and car

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Sunset Beach Police are looking for a man they say could be a danger to himself and others.

According to reports, 31-year-old Derek Craig Leighton assaulted his mother at her home last Thursday before stealing her purse and leaving.

On Saturday, his mother reported that he had stolen her Ford Mustang.

Police later found the abandoned car in South Carolina.

They think Leighton may be in the Sunset Beach area.

He’s described as a white male, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 120 pounds with brown eyes, brown hair and a scar on his front shoulder.
