Police urge residents, visitors to evacuate
NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY)– In Wrightsville Beach, mandatory evacuations began earlier today because of the strong wind and heavy rains expected on the island.
Town leaders gave an update today at the Bridge Tender restaurant.
The goal was to inform people about how to prepare for the storm.
Police Chief Daniel House says, the department declared a state of emergency yesterday following a mandatory order from the governor.
He stated, “Once winds reach uh, tropical storm force winds, we will no longer be responding, so if you do decide to stay or do not heed warnings, and you call for 911, there’s nobody’s who’s gonna be coming.”
House also said listening to warnings is important for residents and first responders.
News conferences will happen twice daily throughout the storm.
House said the last update is expected to be Friday.
