Police increase security at high school football game

COLUMBUS COUNTY — For the past week Whiteville High School has been on high alert after rumors of gun violence in school. Friday night they’re carrying the extra security over into the football game.

The rumors of gun violence came after a murder last Friday in Lake Waccamaw after the Whiteville at East Columbus football game.

Twenty-two-year-old Darnell Frink was killed and two others were shot in the legs.
No incidents have occurred at school this week, but officials want to be sure nothing happens at tonight’s game.

Whiteville Police Department Agent Chris Dudley said, “We have requested 18 additional officers from the chief because of the gang violence after the shooting last week in Lake Waccamaw. There will be metal detectors and we are checking anyone that walks in.”

Whiteville won last week’s game against East Columbus.

Pender High and Whiteville aren’t as big of rivals, so officials don’t expect problems.
