Port City Track Club ready for National Championships
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Port City Track Club is runnin down a dream again.
We are one week away from the start of the USA Track and Field national championships and our local speedsters are getting ready.
Today the club took to Laney High School for some last minute touch up work ahead of the biggest and final meet of their season.
This doesn’t come as new territory anymore for these athletes, they head back into the national championships for the second year in a row.
The meet begins monday and runs throughout the week with our local athletes participating in both track and field events.
It may be the second year for the club in nationals, but they compete for more than just medals.
“It gives them another stage and platform for them to showcase their talents,” Club Coach Capser Powe said. “Hopefully a lot of these kids want to earn scholarships, but even those who are younger, not graduating, or juniors, it gives other colleges and other people to see them early in their running careers.”
“Not many of us from this area actually make it,” Track Athlete Keyana Yeoman said. “You mostly see people from the Raleigh and Greensboro area that is more serious about track. We’re just there to prove that we’re just like them. Go Port City!”
