FIRST ON 3: Cannon found along Wilmington Riverfront

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A possible piece of history was discovered this afternoon as crews work on the Riverwalk in Wilmington.

Crews on scene tell WWAY a cannon was found in front of the federal courthouse on Water Street. Crews are working in the area to improve the bulkhead and Riverwalk area.

The WPD bomb unit was sent to the site to make sure it is safe.

“It appears to be ok,” Mike Donelson with the WPD bomb unit said. “It’s been in the ground a long time.”

City officials said experts from the Cape Fear Museum and Fort Fisher State Recreation Area are expected to visit the site tomorrow to learn more about the cannon and determine steps for preservation.
