President’s budget proposal includes funds for Wilmington projects

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — $60.5 million in federal funds could be coming to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for projects in the Wilmington area.

According to a news release, the President released both the work plan for the 2017 fiscal year and his budget proposal for 2018.

The 2017 work plan provides funding of $21.5 million for Coastal Storm Damage Reduction Projects. Specifically, money was received for projects in Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and vicinity, and Ocean Isle Beach.

The Carolina Beach project includes placing sand on both Carolina and Kure Beaches. These are cost share projects, which means the federal government provides 65% of the total nourishment costs.

$15.3 million will also go toward maintenance projects, which includes money for the Masonboro Inlet and Connecting Channels for mitigation of jetty impacts to Wrightsville beach. Money was also received to dredge Wilmington Harbor.
