Professional organizer shares secrets on how you can tidy up your home
HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — When it comes to tidying up, we could all use a little push. If you caught the Marie Kondo bug, there is a someone right here in the Cape Fear who can help.
“I’m teaching them how to stay organized after I leave,” said Erika Burfield, who is a professional organizer.
You could say Burfield is Wilmington’s own version of Marie Kondo. The professional organizer says it was a habit that turned into an entire business.
“It was something that’s always been ingrained in me. It was something that I grew up doing. I was always the go-to babysitter. I tidied up as I was in people’s homes,” said Burfield. “It turned into, ‘Hey, you’re really organized. Do you mind coming to help me?’ As a 16-year-old. Then I thought, ‘Wow, this is really something I enjoy doing.”
That turned into Erika B Solutions.
Burfield has been stepping up the organization game in homes for 10 years. From junk drawers to the whole house.
“Basically whatever is bothering you. Whatever you feel like ‘Gosh, I’m going to pull my hair out. I need help organizing this,'” said Burfield.
Burfield says she has helped around 500 clients so far. How does she do it? Burfield says she lives by the following four rules.
“Continuously purge. Group and sort everything by like item or category. Label everything. Only fill to about 80% capacity,” said Burfield.
Burfield says starts each client off with a consultation. She says she spends an average of four or five hours on a project.
Burfield says it’s all pretty simple.
“It’s just creating a routine and creating a system. Organization isn’t hard and it doesn’t take a lot of time. You just have to make yourself do it,” said Burfield.
Burfield says she works with clients throughout the Cape Fear, but she has clients all the way in Virginia and DC.
