NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (StarNews) — The NC Department of Transportation will soon begin work on a two-year, $12.6 million project to widen and create new turning lanes for a 9-mile stretch of Carolina Beach Road.

Scott Cooke, resident engineer with the local DOT division, said the project — scheduled to start near the end of the month — will place concrete dividers where left turns lanes now exist in the median of Carolina Beach Road. The project extends from the roadway’s intersection with Echo Farms Road to Snow’s Cut Bridge, he said.

“The median crossovers will be converted” to allow only traffic along Carolina Beach Road to use them, he said. Motorists on side streets will no longer be able to access the median turn lanes.
