Project to repave, relane area at Isabel Holmes Bridge nearing end

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you drive in or out of Wilmington and you use the Isabel Holmes bridge, you might have noticed a new traffic pattern.

What used to be two lanes to turn left on US 421 South and two lanes to turn right on US 421 North have been reduced to three. You now only have one lane to turn right and head to northern New Hanover County. For drivers turning right to get on the bridge, there’s now a concrete barrier to separate those lanes from drivers who want to turn left on US 421 to get on the bridge.

NCDOT spokesman Brian Rick said the object of the project is to create a dedicated right turn lane coming off of US 421 to US 74 (the bridge). The deadline for the project is Monday, Rick said.
