WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Day four of the Tyler Yee murder trial finished Thursday afternoon with the state resting its case.

Yee is accused of shooting and killing his friend 17-year-old Raymond Kain.

Without the jury present the state played a recorded phone call between Yee and his grandmother while Yee was behind bars.

In the call, Yee’s grandmother asks him to cut his hair and look innocent and young for the trial.

“I’m your only witness… I will not be your witness if you don’t cut your hair,” Yee’s grandmother said. “This is not good.”

During the call Yee’s grandmother is preparing Yee for what he should expect in court. At the time Yee thought his case would be dismissed.

“No one wins. Somebody has to pay for Ray’s death,” Yee’s grandmother said. “You’re not walking Tyler. Never… Let the evidence work for you.”

Yee’s grandmother told Yee he’s going to jail it is just a matter of how many years he will be put away for.

“I want my boy out before I die,” Yee’s grandmother said.

Yee’s grandmother also brought up a snitch and looking for that person prior to the trial.

During the phone call, while discussing the court process Yee told his grandmother in part “my attorney said I did it by accident, but that would be lying.”

The judge ultimately decided he would not play the recording to the jury following Yee’s attorney’s request. The judge also denied the defense’s motion to dismiss Yee’s case.

The trial resumes Monday.
