Public hearing Thursday on proposed retail, apartments off Village Rd.

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — New retail shops and apartments could be headed to an area off Village Road in Leland.

Town leaders are holding public hearings this week to discuss the proposed development.

“I looked in the backyard and the land just started being cleared,” Kaylla Spence said. “Trees going down.”

Kaylla Spencer lives on Fairview Road. That is where Leland town leaders are proposing to build a 19 acre development that includes 30,000 sf. of retail/commercial space.

“We were a little shocked when we saw the trees started going down,” Spencer said.

According to the proposal, the new development, Harrington Village, is also expected to include 300 luxury apartments in 13 separate buildings. The proposal said it would be in between Baldwin Drive and Fairview Road off Village Road.

“If it’s directly in our backyard, no, we are not too excited about it,” Spencer said.

While Spencer has some concerns about what it could bring, William Benton is glad to see some change.

“There is a rundown trailer park behind my house,” Benton said.

Benton said he has been waiting for someone to buy that land.

“I’ve been wanting to see this area build up,” Benton said.

To an extent, Spencer agrees.

“Hopefully maybe increasing our property value,” Spencer said. “That’s what we’re kind of holding onto hopes for.”

She has a list of concerns though.

“We’re a little bit nervous about it, a little bit worried about it as far as the traffic back here,” Spencer said. “It’s already kind of busy and our kids play in our yard. Those types of things. Where is the access point going to be? They are talking about building a road in my neighbor’s yard.”

The Town Council also intends to authorize the purchase of property located on Fairview Road to be used in conjunction with the project for public right of way and a regional detention pond. The cost of acquiring these two lots is estimated to be $50,000. That would be paid from the Town’s general fund.

That is why town leaders are giving all of the neighbors a chance to weigh in at a public hearing first.

The public hearing will be this Thursday at town hall starting at 6:00 p.m. You have to sign up to speak.
