Rally in Wilmington for voter rights
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This morning folks gathered in Downtown Wilmington to rally for voting rights across the state.
Led by New Hanover County NAACP President, Deborah Dicks Maxwell, folks delivered a letter to Senator Burr’s office expressing their concerns and asking him to vote in favor of the Voting Rights Re-Authorization Act.
“It’s so important that we’re having a trial about this. Because we would not have the laws in North Carolina that have been placed in if the voting rights act had been in place. We would not have these voter suppression ideas,” Maxwell said.
Maxwell also adds that current voter laws are making it difficult for people of color and different socioeconomic statuses to vote. She said many of those people do not have the means to advocate for themselves, so the NAACP is advocating for them.
The New Hanover County NAACP will be sponsoring a free bus to Raleigh on Thursday as part of a march from Selma to Washington DC for voter rights.
