Rare shrimp found off NC coast

In a discussion about oxymorons, George Carlin pointed to the term jumbo shrimp as a good example. A shrimp found by Southport fisherman Royce Potter Monday would make the late comedian proud.

The shrimp is an Asian black tiger shrimp, and he measures in at almost ten inches. That type of shrimp is rare off our coast. So rare in fact, Potter had to notify the Division of Marine Fisheries when he caught him, and the state may want to keep him as a specimen. Until then, the shrimp is on ice.

Potter said he was pretty surprised when he reeled in the net. “It looked like a baby lobster. So we didn’t know what it was at first,” he said. “Just one little piece of the tail was sticking up out of the other shrimp.”
