Records or near records for sea turtles in SC in ’15

CHARLESTON, SC (AP) — Records were set or approached during 2015 as volunteers worked to protect sea turtles along the South Carolina coast.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports a record 30 sick or injured turtles from South Carolina waters were treated at the Sea Turtle Hospital at the South Carolina Aquarium. Among those turtles was a first for the aquarium – a 5-foot long, 500-pound leatherback.

In addition, a record 32 turtles were released back into the ocean after being treated at the aquarium. And just over 5,100 turtle nests were found along the state’s coast. That’s about 100 nests shy of a record.

A Kemp’s ridley turtle nest was found in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, only the third such nest documented in the state.
