Red flag warning issued for Oak Island beaches

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the ocean after the National Weather Service forecast Red Flag conditions for Oak Island’s Beach Warning Flag system on Friday, July 10, 2026.
A Red Flag indicates a high risk of dangerous rip currents and rough surf, creating hazardous conditions for anyone entering the water. Officials emphasize that during Red Flag conditions, there is no identified safe water depth for swimming or other in-water activities.
While Oak Island’s beaches remain open for visitors to enjoy the shoreline, residents and tourists are strongly advised not to swim or participate in any water-based activities until conditions improve.
Rip currents are powerful channels of water that can quickly pull swimmers away from shore. Even experienced swimmers can become overwhelmed when Red Flag conditions are in effect.
Beach visitors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Beach Warning Flag system and learn how to recognize rip currents and what to do if caught in one. Additional beach safety information is available by selecting the Beach Safety tab on the Beach Information page.
Officials remind everyone to regard posted warning flags and prioritize safety while enjoying Oak Island’s beaches.
