Local Red Cross icon dies at age 87

A woman at the heart of the local American Red Cross has died. Alice Snead passed away Thursday at the age of 87.

Snead’s service to the Red Cross started in 1942, when she was a member of the Nurse’s Aid Corps in Richmond, Virginia.

She moved to Wilmington in the 1950’s. Since then, she has served as both a Cape Fear chapter employee and volunteer.

Alice’s history with the Red Cross was featured in the recent Cape Fear Museum exhibit, recounting the Cape Fear chapter’s 100 years of service.
