Registration open for Gallop for the Gravy

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Registration is open for a Port City Thanksgiving tradition.

The Wilmington Rest Rotary Club is inviting runners and walkers to show gratitude before sitting down for their holiday meal next month. The annual Gallop for the Gravy hits the pavement Nov. 26 at 8 a.m. at the Wilmington Family YMCA on Market Street.

Themed as “The Run for the Hungry,” this year’s 5K race and 1 Mile Fun Run will benefit three local and international charities. While onsite registration is available, organizers urge participants to sign up early.

“You can register right now for both the 5K race and Fun Run at www.active.com,” she said. “This way, you can spend your pre-race time warming up rather than signing up.”

According to event organizer Kate Brandis, Wilmington West Rotary sees the event as dual-purposed: a fun, healthy activity for people of all ages – and a way to help alleviate hunger in our own community and worldwide.

“All monies we raise through entries and sponsorships will go to charities either located in Wilmington or with Wilmington roots, including Full Belly Project, Nourish NC and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard,” Brandis said in a news release.

The 5K run, now in its ninth year, winds through the Forest Hills neighborhood and culminates back at the YMCA with an awards ceremony, refreshments and homemade pies.

The entry fee is $30 with a $5 discount offered through Saturday.
