Rematch set for Carolina Beach mayoral candidates

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Carolina Beach candidates for mayor are facing off again. Just seven votes decided the last contest for mayor between Dan Wilcox and Bob Lewis in 2013. Wilcox edged out Lewis, who was appointed mayor in 2012 after Mayor Ray Rothrock resigned.  This Election Day will be a rematch.

Lewis said there is more that can be done when it comes to solving some big issues like flood water mitigation and beach nourishment.

“In the future years we don’t know if the federal government is going to fund that so my objective is finding a funding source to help us fund re-nourishment of our beach,” said Lewis.

Lewis said there also needs to be a better plan for storm water mitigation.

“I think there are strategies that can help us and I am really working on that as well,” said Lewis.

Current Mayor Dan Wilcox said they have made some big strides when it comes to addressing flooding and beach re-nourishment.

“Myself and council would like to finish what we started,” said Wilcox. “They are most importantly continued upgrades to our infrastructure, water, sewer and storm water.”

“We’ve made excellent progress in our beach nourishment issue with regards to extending that program for 15 years and I truly believe that over the next two years like we would solve the funding issue as well,” said Wilcox.

Wilcox said they have gotten a lot done and he wants to continue to do more for Carolina Beach.

“There are a lot of things on this island, a lot of resources that we can concentrate on and make them better,” said Wilcox.

Election Day is Tuesday November 3.
