Report: Hammerheads won’t play next year

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A soccer news website reports that the Wilmington Hammerheads will not play next season.

ScratchingThePitch.com, which covers American professional soccer leagues, including the USL, cites “sources within the league” who say the Hammerheads will go on hiatus next year. The site also says the Austin Aztex would also remain on hiatus from the USL.

Hammerheads GM Jason Arnold said he could not comment on the report this afternoon.

Team owner George Altirs and head coach Mark Briggs did not immediately return messages from WWAY.

Our news partners at the StarNews report that when reached by phone this afternoon, Altirs said, “Nothing is confirmed.”

The Hammerheads have skipped a season before. The team did not play in 2010 because of financial struggles. It returned a year later after former owner Bill Rudisill took over. He sold the team to Altirs in 2013.
