Report: Improvements key for wounded soldiers unit

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) – The 18th Airborne chief of staff says an
inspection of Fort Bragg’s battalion for wounded soldiers shows the
post needs to do better in selecting and training the unit’s staff
leaders.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that
Brig. Gen. Michael X. Garrett made his comments Tuesday while
releasing findings of an inspector general’s report.

Garrett says while the inspection confirms that the Warrior
Transition Battalion is doing many things right, Fort Bragg
recommends improvements to better serve its nearly 500 physically
and mentally wounded soldiers.

The commander of the 18th Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg ordered
the inspection following complaints from spouses of soldiers in the
battalion. Advocates told Lt. Gen. Frank G. Helmick that some
soldiers in the battalion believed they are being overmedicated,
poorly treated and unfairly discharged.
