Republican earmark ban fails Senate vote

North Carolina’s senators stood divided today as a Republican push to eliminate pet projects failed.

Republican Richard Burr supported the proposed three-year ban on earmarks, while Democrat Kay Hagan joined the 56 senators voting against the ban.

The proposal would have effectively forbidden the Senate from considering legislation containing earmarks like road and bridge projects, grants to police departments and special-interest tax breaks.
