Retention Ponds are killing birds in local neighborhoods according to Skywatch Bird Rescue

Castle Hayne, NC (WWAY) — According to Skywatch Bird Rescue, changes need to be made to retention ponds to help save wildlife in the area.

A retention pond at the Gardens Condominium Complex in New Hanover County sometimes has flightless baby ducks, geese, and other animals make their way into it, but some cannot get out.

The Gardens resident, Huter Wilson says “Last week we noticed that there was a family of geese with a baby goose in the pond, noticed pretty quickly that there was no way for it to get out.”

Wilson contacted local non-profit Skywatch Bird Rescue, and together they were able to save the baby gosling.

Skywatch director, Amelia Mason said “one by one we’re approaching these locations and making them aware of these problems. I show them photos of what types of ramps, wildlife escape ramps work sufficiently and how easily and cost effectively it can be done.”

In the end Wilson and Skywatch just want to see wildlife protected and safe.
