River to Sea Bicycle Ride planned for April 22nd
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The 28th Annual River to Sea Bicycle Ride from Downtown Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach is later this month. Organizers say the ride, which is a slow-paced casual 20-mile or 13-mile round trip ride along the former Beach Car Line and back, will reach Wrightsville Beach Park at about 9:15am.
There are two groups:
Option 1 – Confident Riders
- 20 miles (round-trip), estimated ride time 2 hrs 45 min
- Meet at 12 N. Front St. in downtown Wilmington
- Registration starts at 7:15 am and group will depart at 8:00 am
Option 2 – Inexperienced Riders, Families, Children
- 13 miles (round-trip), estimated ride time 2 hours
- Meet at Empie Park, 3405 Park Ave
- Registration starts at 7:30 am and group will depart at 8:15 am
Police will be providing assistance to the bicyclists since there will be no scheduled roadway closures as part of the ride. But due to the anticipated large number of bicyclists, organizers say there may be some delays for vehicle traffic along the route.
These delays may occur at the following locations:
North Front Street between Bailey’s Park and Ann Street
Ann Street between South Front Street and South 15th Street
South 15th Street between Ann Street and Castle Street
Castle Street between South 15th Street and Colwell Avenue
Colwell Avenue
Park Avenue
Greenville Avenue between Park Avenue and Oleander Drive
Oleander Drive between Greenville Avenue and Wrightsville Avenue
Wrightsville Avenue between S. 44th Street and MacMillian Ave
Heide-Trask Drawbridge
The ride is open to cyclists of all skill levels. Pre-registration is free and late arrivals will not be able to join the ride for safety reasons. Helmets are mandatory and riding is mostly on-road in mixed traffic. Limited transportation will also be provided by WAVE Transit. Last year, about 400 bicyclists participated in the ride.
