Cooper expected to discuss offshore drilling during Wrightsville Beach visit

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Gov. Roy Cooper is bringing is fight against off shore drilling to our area next week.

Cooper is planning to visit Wrightsville Beach Monday, the governor’s spokesman tells WWAY. He expects Cooper to talk about his opposition to offshore drilling.

Earlier this month the federal government announced plans to allow drilling along the east coast. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced the plan saying that responsible development of offshore energy resources would boost jobs and economic security while providing billions of dollars to fund conservation along U.S. coastlines.

Cooper has vowed to fight the plan any way he can to protect the coastal economy, including the tourism and fishing industries. He and South Carolina’s governor have asked for the same exemption from the plans that the federal government recently granted to Florida.

Earlier this week Brunswick County commissioners voted to rescind a 2015 resolution supporting offshore drilling and seismic testing in the Atlantic Ocean.
