Sacrifice, legacy to be focus of symposium on Civil War

SOUTHPORT, NC (AP) — A symposium about the sacrifices made during the Civil War will be held in Southport and Wilmington.

A session Friday night will be held at Murrow Hall in Southport, and the Saturday event will be held at Morton Hall at UNC-Wilmington.

The symposium is titled “What a Cruel Thing is War: Sacrifice and Legacies of the Civil War.” Participants will hear presentations on the cult of sacrifice, Confederate widowhood, and death among black Union regiments.

It’s the last symposium of three organized by the NC Department of Cultural Resources as part of the Civil War 150th anniversary commemoration started in 2011.

The event starts Friday with an afternoon tour of Fort Anderson.

Registration is $26.29, or $10.68 for students, with tax, and includes lunch.
