‘Safe Harbor’ bill moving through state legislature

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A bill to combat human trafficking in North Carolina is quickly moving through the legislature. Senator Thom Goolsby is spearheading the legislation.

The bill would rewrite the state’s trafficking laws, creating a “safe harbor” for trafficking victims. Victims would no longer be charged in connection with the crime and traffickers would face tougher penalties.

The bill could reach the full House for a vote as early as this week.

North Carolina ranks as the eight worst state for human trafficking.
