SBI opens investigation on UNCW women’s soccer coach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We now have new details into the investigation against UNCW Women’s Soccer Coach Paul Cairney.

The head coach was put on administrative leave in early December.

WWAY found tweets accusing Coach Cairney of sexual misconduct at a UNCW soccer camp.

New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David confirms that the State Bureau of Investigation is opening up an investigation into Cairney.

On February 5, David says he and the UNCW police chief along with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office made a request to the SBI to do an outside investigation into Cairney.
