SBMS student suspended, charged with making false report of school shooting
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A 12-year-old South Brunswick Middle School student is suspended and now charged after an incident that happened early this morning.
According to a news release from Brunswick County Schools, around 7:30 a.m., the 6th grader got to school and told fellow 6th graders that he heard there will be a shooting today.
The students immediately told their teacher who contacted administration.
The School Resource Officer immediately took the student into custody. The school district says there is no believed danger to students.
The student has been suspended and charged with making a false report concerning mass violence on educational property.
Detectives continue to interview the student.
Schools spokesman Daniel Seamans said the students showed exactly what to do if they see or hear anything of concern, by immediately telling a school staff member.
“Brunswick County Schools works closely with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office so that our children can have a safe and enjoyable learning environment,” Seamans said in the release. “Student safety is the #1 priority.”
