Schools respond to new state grades
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The majority of North Carolina schools received a “C” average grade, in school performance grades released Thursday. In the Cape Fear region, we also saw a lot of “C” and “D” grades, but school leaders urge parents to not jump to conclusions about this new grading system.
The State Board of Education released the grades of more than 2,400 public schools. Eighty percent of the school grades are based on how students performed on standardized tests.
In Brunswick County, more than 75% of schools received a grade of “C” or better. Four schools received a “D,” no schools got an “F.” South Brunswick Middle School teacher Kayce Smith says these grades have a very narrow focus and do not show every aspect of a student’s educational experience.
“The best way for our community and parents to be informed about our school and students progress is to be in touch with the school, the teachers, with the principals,” Smith said.
In New Hanover County, more schools received a “B” or “A” grade than Brunswick County, but one school received a “F.”
“There’s always room for improvement,” Dr. Tim Markley, NHCS superintendent said. “It’s really a conversation starter.”

Schools receive an “F” if they score below 40 out of 100 points. Students themselves receive an “F” grade if they score below 63.
All schools receiving a “D” or “F” must send letters to students’ parents informing them of the grade.
