Scouts honor fallen soldiers

Local cub and boy scouts honored all of the fallen soldiers at the Wilmington National Cemetery on Saturday.

The troops placed small flags by each of the grave markers to honor the men and women who have given their lives in battle.

Many of the gravesites mark the resting place of unknown soldiers.

The scouts said recognizing our servicemen and women is the least they could do. “They have done a lot for us and we should appreciate that by recognizing Memorial Day. They supported us, now we support them,” said scout Ramon Serrano.

The Wilmington National Cemetery was opened in 1867, and is home to more than 5,000 soldiers, many of who died in the Battle of Fort Fisher during the Civil War.
