Sea Dawgs prepare to host championship game

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It will be a battle of cats and dogs when the Wilmington Sea Dawgs host the Savannah Wildcats for the Continental Basketball League championship Sunday night. The two teams have played five times this season. The Sea Dawgs won three of the matchups, including the regular season finale. That victory on June 19 earned the Sea Dawgs the right to host the CBL championship game sunday with the league’s best record, despite the fact the Sea Dawgs played a bit sloppy down the final stretch of the regular season.

“We lost a few games,” forward J.J. Cook said. “We had lost three out of four, but we came back and beat Fayetteville and beat Savannah so we could host this thing on Sunday.”

The CBL championship comes down to just one game. It’s not a series. It’s not going to be drawn out like the NBA Finals. It’s for all the marbles: Bragging rights and a league championship trophy.

“We gotta do the same thing. We’ve got to match them blow by blow,” guard Aaron Scott said. “We have to come out and play hard and scrap with them. We have to rebound and make our free throws and box out. If we do that, we can pretty much beat anybody.”

“We are the premier franchise from top to bottom. From event staff to the way we run games,” head coach Dale Kuhl said. “I think it was important for us to host this and to be able to put on our best performance as an organization.”

The championship game is Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Schwartz Center in Downtown Wilmington.
