Seahawks release complete hoops slate

WILMINGTON, NC (news release) — The UNCW men’s basketball team begins the crux of its Colonial Athletic Association schedule with three games in six days in early January, beginning with a Jan. 2 date at revamped Trask Coliseum against Delaware.

CAA officials released the league schedule late Wednesday. All dates are subject to change.

The Seahawks open their conference slate on Saturday, Dec. 17, with a road game against Final Four participant VCU at the Siegel Center. Coach Buzz Peterson’s club then plays three more non-conference contests before returning to CAA action against the Blue Hens.

Overall, UNCW plays 10 games in January, evenly split between home and road outings. The January schedule includes Saturday home dates with Hofstra (Jan. 7) and Drexel (Jan. 14) and a matchup on Wednesday, Jan. 25, with defending champion Old Dominion in Wilmington. The ODU game is part of a busy stretch of five games in 11 days for the Seahawks.

In February, Peterson’s club plays three of its first four games at home, starting with back-to-back dates with Georgia State (Feb. 1) and William & Mary (Feb. 4). The Seahawks wrap up their home schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 22, when VCU pays a visit to Trask and UNCW concludes the regular season by traveling to Hofstra on Saturday, Feb. 25.

UNCW makes its seventh appearance in the ESPN BracketBusters series on Saturday, Feb. 18. The Seahawks made their debut in 2004 and have compiled a 1-5 record, including an 0-3 record away from home.

Clashes with Atlantic Coast Conference foes Maryland and Wake Forest highlight the early portion of the non-conference ledger.

The Seahawks kick off the new campaign with a 4 p.m. exhibition on Oct. 29 against NCAA Division II St. Andrews and a 4:30 exhibition on Nov. 6 with St. Augustine’s.

The whirlwind non-conference slate opens with back-to-back road trips to Maryland and Dayton before cranking into high gear with nine more games in the last two months of the calendar year.
