On Wednesday the UNCW men's basketball team snapped their losing skid against the Panthers of Georgia State. The Seahawks won 76-72 at Trask Coliseum. On Wednesday we also showcased women's basketball action with Cape Fear hosting Brunswick and high school basketball play between North & South Brunswick. Plus, signing day for local high school seniors.

On Wednesday night the UNCW men's basketball team captured their second consecutive conference win. The Seahawks are now 2-3 in the CAA after a 65-60 victory over Old Dominion. On Wednesday on WWAY we also featured Wilmington's Derek Brunson. The Hoggard graduate is an MMA pro. Brunson recently won his UFC debut in Las Vegas.
Beginning on Jan. 14, CFCC's barber school program will provide students with the skills to become a professional barber. Over the course of 12-14 months, classes will prepare students for the North Carolina Board Exam which will result in an apprentice license.
UNCW recently hired an English professor whose previous publications are worrying some parents. Students say although some of the poems are shocking, they do not have a problem with the professor's risque work, and the university agrees.
Crime in Wilmington is down from 2004 to 2012, but police say there is still a need for an increased force focusing on fighting crime before it happens. Wilmington's police chief proposed a new approach to City Council this morning.
Wilmington Police say students have helped them find human remains as they searched for an elderly woman missing since early November in the Love Grove community.

On Monday the East Carolina Pirates held their final Greenville practice before heading to New Orleans for their upcoming bowl game. On Monday WWAY had high school hoops from Pender High. It was a backyard rivalry game between the Patriots and the Topsail Pirates. Duke is now #1 in the country in men's basketball.
Friday night was jam packed with high school hoops in the region. It even included a court dedication ceremony at Laney High School for longtime Laney coaches Fred Lynch and Ruby Sutton. Doubleheaders are rare at Trask Coliseum, but that was the case on Wednesday night. The UNCW men's basketball team defeated Coker. The UNCW women's basketball squad lost to Charlotte.

Trask Coliseum was the place to be on Sunday for the season opener for the UNCW men's basketball team. The UNC Wilmington-UNC Asheville game was tied at the half, but Buzz Peterson's squad prevailed in the end with an 8 point victory..... On Sunday the Carolina Panthers wore black pants for the first time in franchise history. The Panthers scored first, but the Denver Broncos breezed to a 36-14 victory in Charlotte..... Plus more !

On Wednesday on WWAY we spared no detail in featuring Wilmington resident Connor Barth. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker currently holds the NFL's longest active streak of field goals made with 25.
