SECU Foundation donates $1M to Good Shepherd Center

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington will soon be home to a one of a kind housing development thanks to a big donation from the SECU Foundation.

The Good Shepherd Center plans to build 40 units of affordable housing for single adults with disabilities — including seniors and veterans. Thanks to a $1 million dollar donation from the State Employees Credit Union Foundation, they are a step closer to building those units.

Good Shepherd’s Executive Director Katrina Knight said there are plenty of shelters in our area, but not enough affordable housing.

“What we don’t have is that answer to homelessness, we don’t have enough of affordable housing, in particular the special kinds of housing for folks who need a little extra support to afford it and to be able to stay in it in a very healthy and stable way,” Knight said.

The residential complex will be build on 4.2 acres of donated land behind Legion Stadium.
