Security increased at two Brunswick County schools over alleged threats

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram has assigned additional deputies at two schools as a precaution after hearing rumors regarding threats.

According to a joint news release from Brunswick County Schools and Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, School Resource Officers at North Brunswick High School and Leland Middle School were alerted to some rumors circulating throughout the schools regarding threats.

The release says threats to any of the schools in Brunswick County are taken very seriously and immediately addressed by law enforcement.

Detectives are investigating the rumors and believe them to be unsubstantiated, but they will continue to investigate until the source of the rumors is identified and held accountable.

Public Information Officer Daniel Seamans said in a statement, “Brunswick County Schools is aware of the rumors involving Leland Middle School and North Brunswick High School.  As is protocol, with any rumors of this kind, BCS took immediate action and alerted School Resource Officers. Student safety is always the priority.  The situation is being investigated by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and we are working closely with them.”

Seamans added that there is not believed to be any danger to students.
