Security boosted when students with guns arrested

CHARLOTTE — Two students have been arrested after unloaded shotguns were found in their car, leading officials to bring extra security to their North Carolina high school.

The Charlotte Observer reported Friday the students were arrested Thursday at Independence High School after security guards saw four students leave campus. A security guard had noticed odd behavior from the students during lunch.

The students were stopped off campus by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, who found the guns in the trunk. The school system said in a statement that one gun had a sawed off barrel.

The statement said the two students were charged with having weapons on campus, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon of mass destruction. Neither student’s age or name has been released.
