Security tight at UNCW commencement ceremonies
Commencement ceremonies are going on Friday at UNC Wilmington. Due to a bomb threat last week, security is tight at Trask Coliseum. Everyone entering the building has to be scanned with metal detectors. Despite the extra security the ceremonies are running on time.
UNCW Police Chief David Donaldson said, “What’s unusual this year is how public some of our efforts are, and how visible are efforts are. We’ve had a lot of assistance from the New Hanover Sheriff’s Department, Wilmington Police Department, UNC Chapel Hill, ATF, FBI and State Capitol Police to put in place the security measures appropriate for this event.”
Four ceremonies are being held over two days for the first time in the history of UNC Wilmington. The public is advised to avoid university entrances as traffic will be heavy this evening and tomorrow.
