Senate hopeful comments on recent shootings, pushes Social Security improvements

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  Deborah Ross is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate against Senator Richard Burr. But she isn’t new to public office. She spent ten years in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Ross said she would pull from her prior experience to respond to the recent officer-involved shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana and the police shootings in Texas.

Ross said during her time in office she pushed for legislation that promoted community policing policies and accurate statistics on racial profiling to be used for law enforcement training.

She said there’s much to be done if lawmakers want communities to be put back together again.

“We need to bring our communities together and right now they are being torn apart,” said Ross. “Our leaders need to stand up for what’s right and we need to make sure everybody feels safe.”

Ross was here in Wilmington to discuss ways to strengthen Social Security and Medicare programs. She said one way to do that is to make sure those who make the most money continue to pay into Social Security for longer periods of time.

“The sooner we make sure that Social Security is strengthened and protected, the better it’s going to be, not just for this generation but for future generations,” said Ross.

Several people attended her discussion including Wilmington Councilman Paul Lawler.
