Seniors go above and beyond at New Hanover High School
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A number of students will soon graduate from New Hanover High School, but a handful have gone the extra mile to make an impact.
From accomplishments in athletics, academics and extra-curriculars, these students are a class act. Cecilia Beard will attend UNC Chapel Hill in the fall as a Morehead-Cain scholar and said she owes her success to pursuing her passions.
“Try everything and do not be afraid of what other people might perceive you as,” Beard said. “All of my favorite things I’ve experienced in high school were things I was passionate about and didn’t let other people judge me about.”
Beard, the student body president, started the school’s Model UN Club and hopes to pursue a career with the State Department or CIA.
Senior Hasler Roberson’s diagnosis with lupus, two years ago, is leading her to pursue a career as a pediatrician.
“I decided that because I could be compassionate and understand my patients on a different level, I wanted to become a Rheumatologist, and I love working with kids and Ibabysit all the time,” Roberson said. Like beard she will attend Carolina in the fall.
“Just stepping onto campus and even into Chapel Hill, you just feel like this is where you’re supposed to be,” she said.
Excelling is a family affair for triplets Brittany, Adam, and Colleen Pecoraro. A horseback rider, a baseball player, and a gold medal figure skater, all three have balanced academics and athletics.
“I definitely think I’ll miss these guys,” Brittany said. “That will be kind of the first time we’re apart from each other for a long time. That will be a big change, but I’m excited to go through it with them.”
The triplets will attend Meredith College, NC State and UNC Charlotte, but with nerves comes excitement.
“I look forward to that freedom that you’ve never had and that feeling of autonomy,” Adam said.
Brittany plans to become a veterinarian while Adam and Colleen want to become doctors.
“Our dad is also a doctor, so we would like to kind of follow in his footsteps and it’s just kind of a really good place for us,” Colleen said.
Wherever the future leads, it’s a bright one for all these New Hanover High Students.
