Service planned for woman who helped Durham sing

DURHAM — A memorial service is scheduled for a woman who helped Durham sing.

Among Ella Fountain Pratt’s accomplishments was getting operatic soprano Leontyne Price to perform in Durham in 1984.

The Herald-Sun of Durham reported Wednesday that the service will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 9 at First Presbyterian Church.

Pratt died Monday at the age of 94 in Durham.

Pratt also worked with folk singer Pete Seeger to start the first large folk festival in Durham in 1968. That festival marked the first appearance in Durham of famed flatpicker Doc Watson.

She also produced a performance of Georges Bizet’s “Carmen” for the public, having it performed in Brightleaf Square.
