High school football standouts among several arrested in drug bust

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department Gang Unit concluded a month-long gang and narcotics investigation Thursday with the arrest of three validated gang members, one juvenile and four other people.

With assistance from the WPD Vice Unit and the WPD North West Patrol Division, officers arrested several individuals for drug charges and outstanding warrants in the area of South 13th Street and Ann Street.

WPD received numerous complaints from residents about drug activity in that area, prompting the investigation.

Those arrested were:

Wizdom Ryjiek Vaughn, 18, of Wilmington- Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Cocaine and Sell/ Deliver Cocaine.

Vaughn was a standout on the New Hanover football and basketball team and was commited to play football at NC A&T. He was named the 3A NCHSAA State Championship game MVP for his efforts during the football team’s state title victory.

Tyshawn Ellijah Herd, 21, of Wilmington- Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Cocaine, Sell/ Deliver Cocaine, and Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Controlled Substance within 1000 feet of New Hanover High School.

Shaquam Tyshaun Kemp, 17, of Wilmington-  Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Cocaine and Sell/ Deliver Cocaine, 2 counts each charge. Kemp also played on the state championship football team for New Hanover.

Laverne Ross, 52, of Wilmington-  Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Cocaine, Sell/ Deliver Cocaine, and Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Controlled Substance within 1000 feet of New Hanover High School

Tyran Saadiq Joye, 22, of Wilmington-  Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Marijuana, Sell/ Deliver Marijuana, and Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Controlled Substance within 1000 feet of New Hanover High School

Latoya Rashe Bailey, 30, of Wilmington-  Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Cocaine, Sell/ Deliver Cocaine, and Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Controlled Substance within 1000 feet of New Hanover High School.

Brittany Arlene Greene- 29, of Wilmington-3 outstanding Orders for Arrest for Failure to Appear

Juvenile, 15, of Wilmington- Possession with Intent to Sell/Deliver Cocaine and Sell/ Deliver Cocaine

All suspects arrested on drug charges received a $150,000 bond.
