Sex offender whose case heard by Supreme Court arrested

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The convicted sex offender who took his case all the way to the United States Supreme Court over whether he should be forced to wear an ankle bracelet, now faces new charges.

Torrey Dale Grady was convicted in New Hanover County of a second-degree sex offense in 1997 and later convicted in 2006 of taking indecent liberties with a child. The second conviction qualified Grady as a recidivist. In 2013, he was ordered to start wearing the GPS bracelet 24 hours a day so officials could track his movements.

In March of 2015, the justices ruled that the state’s highest court should have considered Grady’s argument that having to wear the ankle bracelet violates his constitutional rights.

On Wednesday, Grady was arrested for multiple sex offender violations, including failing to register, failing to change address and verification of registration information.

He also faces a separate assault charge.

Grady is in jail under a $50,200 bond.
