Sexual assault reports are up at UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In a recent release from UNCW, reports of sexual assault on campus are up. The numbers of reported occurrences have tripled since 2012.

The university says they are increasing their efforts to educate students on these situations and raise awareness of the services in place to help handle them. in 2012, there were three reported cases; in 2013, however, there were nine.

Our partner at the StarNews reports UNCW Chief of Police David Donaldson says the increase in numbers is due to a change in the way these situations are reported, and not due to an increase in assault activity.

We spoke with one UNCW student who feels that although it is good the university is taking steps to get students thinking, the numbers are still high.
