Sheriff: Homeowner interrupts break in, holds suspect at gunpoint

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A homeowner turned the tables on a burglar by pulling a gun on a man she found trying to rob her home.

The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office says Bridgett Montgomery, 29, found Johnny Lee Smith, Jr, 43, leaving the bedroom of her home near Bladenboro yesterday with her jewelry in his hand.

Montgomery drew a handgun and held smith at gunpoint as she dialed 911. However, Smith was able to push past her, got in his car and drove off.

Montgomery described the vehicle to the 911 dispatcher and deputies were able to stop Smith less than 5 miles from the scene on NC 211. They found the stolen jewelry in his var.

“We were fortunate to have a deputy in the area who was able to catch up with Smith and stop him,” Sheriff James McVicker said in a news release. “I am proud of the homeowner, and I am proud of the deputies who responded and made the arrest.”

Deputies booked Smith in the Bladen County Jail under a $7,650 secured bond. He is charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen goods and injury to personal property.

He was also served several outstanding warrants for failing to appear on child support charges.
