Sheriff McMahon on election: ‘I’m just humbled’
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) –- New Hanover County voted to keep Sheriff Ed McMahon Tuesday night, as he held off a challenge from a former deputy.
The Democrat was appointed when Sid Causey retired in 2009. He was elected in 2010. Then, he beat Causey in the May Democratic primary with more than 80 percent of the vote.
Republican and former New Hanover County deputy Jason Vaughn ran against McMahon in the November election, but Vaughn came in far behind the incumbent.
“It’s been a long year, and the community, I’m just humbled and grateful they’ve shown the trust in me, and I’m looking forward to serving another four years,” McMahon said.
According to the New Hanover County Board of Elections, McMahon ended the night with 66 percent of the vote over Vaughn’s 34 percent. There were 21,013 votes separating them.
