Short term rentals still hot topic for Wilmington council

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington City Council discussed short term rentals again this morning at their agenda briefing.

Concerns over the properties continue to spark debate. Council member Kevin O’Grady voiced his worries about preserving residential neighborhoods, suggesting perhaps property owners be required to live in the homes they are renting out.

He said council needs to work together to find the best solution for Wilmington.

“This is a thing that’s very local. This is something that cannot be regulated by a state rule because Charlotte is not like Wilmington is not like Burgaw and we’re certainly not like Wrightsville Beach where of course they want people to come and rent for short terms,” said O’Grady.

He said no one on council is opposed to short term rentals being in the city, the main concerns come from where they are and how they are regulated.
